Mountain Brook, Alabama: A Planned Community Like No Other

Mountain Brook is more than a place to live — its charm makes it a sought-after travel destination just 10 minutes south of Birmingham. With a population of about 22,000, this community has known its purpose for decades: beauty, intentionality, and historical character all woven together.

Conceived in the late 1920s as one of Alabama's first fully planned communities, developer Robert Jemison Jr. returned from European travels with a vision for winding roads, park-like settings, and architecture that fits naturally into the landscape. The result feels like a tucked-away English market town, with old-world brick storefronts, ironwork details, and protected architectural integrity.

Homes range from English Tudor Revival and Italianate villas to French Norman farmhouses, Georgian manors, Craftsman bungalows, and mid-century modern styles. New construction is welcome — but all renovations and new builds are expected to honor the character of the neighborhood.

Three Walkable Villages Mountain Brook is organized around three distinct villages: English Village, with its historic European feel; Crestline Village, casual and beloved by families; and Mountain Brook Village, the most polished, with upscale dining, wine bars, and boutique shopping. Throughout, you'll find European-inspired bakeries, old-school pharmacies, independent boutiques, and cuisine spanning Southern, Mexican, Italian and Thai.

Top-Ranked Schools Mountain Brook City Schools serve 4,387 students and rank among the best in Alabama and the nation. Mountain Brook High School sits in the top 1% of all U.S. high schools per U.S. News & World Report, ranks No. 103 among the nation's STEM high schools, and produces more National Merit Finalists than any other high school in Alabama. Every school in the district has earned Blue Ribbon recognition from the U.S. Department of Education, and the district's Professional Development program has been recognized as a national model.

Mountain Brook High School has also won 204 state athletic championships — and the girls' tennis program holds the all-time record for championships across all Alabama high school sports.

Parks, Recreation & Attractions Jemison Park offers 54 acres of hiking and biking trails along the Cahaba River. Cahaba River Walk Park is ideal for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. Overton Park provides playgrounds and tennis courts, and the 22-acre Alabama Veterans Memorial Park, donated in 2023, honors fallen heroes. The Birmingham Botanical Gardens — with 67.4 acres of Japanese Gardens, herb terraces, and wildflowers — and the Birmingham Zoo, home to 900 animals and 230 species, are both anchored here. Private club options include the Mountain Brook Club and the Country Club of Birmingham.

Once you visit Mountain Brook, you'll understand why people vacation here — and why they never want to leave.
