Rocky Ridge Road Keeps Landing Businesses That Already Have a Following

Most of the businesses that opened on Rocky Ridge Road over the past year started somewhere else. Mark's Mart came to 2501 Rocky Ridge Road as its third store. Harper Hills Collective opened at 2531 as the antique shop's second location, after Moody. White Flowers Gallery, founded in 1986, moved to 2533 from the Shops of Grand River in Leeds. The district isn't incubating many first-time ventures. It's attracting established independents that have already proven themselves and are deciding where to grow.

Neighbors seem to have noticed what's going on. In April, about 75 residents came to a community meeting about a proposed car wash and coffee shop on Rocky Ridge Road. They called it a poor fit for the area's "village-style atmosphere," and the developers withdrew the application. Put those two stories together and you get a clearer picture of where this stretch of Vestavia Hills is heading.

Second Stores, Relocations and Fourth Decades

The pattern goes back further than 2026. In 2025, Knit Happenz moved from 2126 Columbiana Road to Suite 112 at The Shops at Oak Park, into the space Rocky Ridge Chiropractic used to occupy. The shop was marking its 40th year in business at the time. White Flowers opened its Rocky Ridge space on September 15, 2025, across from Publix. Over nearly four decades, owners Diana and Eric Hansen have also run the shop at Brookwood Village, in Mountain Brook and in downtown Homewood.

Mark's Mart followed in March 2026. Brian King told WBRC the store stocks Alabama-made products, including items from suppliers in Selma and Tuscaloosa, built on "relationships that we've made over 50 years." He said the wine selection focuses on quality bottles at good value that you might not find in grocery or convenience stores. Then came Harper Hills Collective on September 10. Owner Wendy Killingsworth stocks furniture, home décor, china sets and other vintage pieces. Shoppers can browse on Instagram and claim an item before they come in.

The newcomers are joining businesses that have been around a long time. The Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce's June 2026 Shop Local Guide lists El Poblano at 2499 Rocky Ridge Road and says it has served the area since 1995. Iz Cafe at 2514 is in the same guide. In August, Toddlers Playhouse and Mobile Party Rentals celebrated five years at 2531. If you're using that Chamber guide, one listing has already gone stale. It still shows Flower Betty at 2531 Rocky Ridge Road, Suite 101, but Harper Hills Collective now occupies that suite.

The Restaurant Address That Changed Twice This Year

At 2516 Rocky Ridge Road, the space behind the water fountain at Rocky Ridge Plaza had a busier 2026 than any other address in the district. Napoli Italian Restaurant & Pizza closed through January because of staffing shortages and held a ribbon cutting for its reopening on February 12. By then, owner Sam Rinka was also running a second restaurant. Caffe Di Roma opened December 3 in The Bray at Liberty Park, in a 1,200-square-foot space that used to be a Papa Murphy's Pizza.

In August, the space had a new name. Pazzo Italian started serving the week of August 19 at the former Napoli site. It's a sit-down Italian restaurant with wine and cocktails. The menu includes handmade pastas, Italian meats and cheeses, crispy calamari, grilled vegetable lasagna, shrimp scampi, chicken parmigiana and gnocchi. Bham Now's opening coverage also mentioned rigatoni Bolognese, chicken piccata, a burrata salad, a baked spinach and goat cheese soufflé, and for dessert a gelato flight, tiramisu and limoncello cake.

Pazzo is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch and 4 to 9:30 p.m. for dinner. The phone number in its Vestavia Voice listing, 205-326-7478, is the same number Napoli's listings used. The local reports we found don't say when Napoli served its last meal or whether it moved anywhere.

April 27, When About 75 Neighbors Weighed In

The proposal would have put a New Day Car Wash and a Bullet coffee shop at 2530 and 2534 Rocky Ridge Road, just north of the Publix shopping center in Rocky Ridge Square. The site is about 2.4 acres and would have replaced an existing office building. LIV Development proposed the car wash, GenRev Properties planned the coffee shop, and the project needed approval from the Vestavia Hills City Council.

The developers made their case directly. At the April 27 meeting, LIV Ventures President Tom Spies said most customers would already be driving on Rocky Ridge Road, so traffic would rise only modestly. The company offered road improvements, including a turn lane, and said the site was engineered so cars wouldn't back up onto Rocky Ridge Road. Residents worried about congestion, noise, effects on nearby homes and preschool traffic at Mountain Chapel Methodist Church, and many said a car wash didn't fit the village-style feel they want. The application was withdrawn after the meeting. Vestavia Voice reported the decision on May 26.

The timing tells you something. That spring, the storefronts filling up nearby were a European-style food market, a gift gallery with a 1986 founding date and a yarn shop in its fifth decade. The withdrawn plan was a 2.4-acre drive-through use. The objection residents put on record was about fit.

The Merchants Program Their Own Evenings

The businesses act like a district on purpose. The Rocky Ridge Merchant Council organized the oRIDGEinals Dinner Crawl on Wednesday, May 27. Tickets were $75 per person, and the evening had three stops:

  1. Mark's Mart, 2501 Rocky Ridge Road, 6 p.m. Wine, gourmet grilled cheese bites, smoked salmon dip and Korean beef skewers.
  2. The Ridge Eat and Drink, 3325 Rocky Ridge Plaza. Filet medallions with cheese grits and Brussels sprouts, plus wine, beer or cocktails.
  3. Sunshine Creamery, 3390 Morgan Drive. Dessert.

The crawl started at the newest arrival and ended around the corner on Morgan Drive. Mark's Mart had been open about two months at that point. A business that opens here gets pulled into the district's shared calendar quickly.

The older businesses are still part of the mix. Alabama Biscuit Co. at 2518 Rocky Ridge Road opened alongside Napoli in Rocky Ridge Plaza in 2023. Its online ordering page still lists the 2518 Rocky Ridge Road store. Over at The Shops at Oak Park, the Chamber guide lists Magic City Needlepoint, which calls itself Birmingham's exclusive needlepoint store. The guide also lists Moe's Original BBQ, which has a full bar and a covered patio.

The Dolly Ridge Turn Lane, and the Sidewalk It Leaves Room For

The one public project on this stretch is about getting people in and out of the district. Vestavia Hills paid $90,000 for the design of a right-turn lane from Rocky Ridge Road onto Dolly Ridge Road. Public works crews are building it with Jefferson County. City officials said the space was tight. The lane had to be designed to fit traffic without threatening the structure of a neighboring dentist's office, and it was built to allow a future sidewalk extension that would connect to other sidewalks nearby. A May report said sidewalk extensions and a pedestrian crossing were planned along with the turn lane.

In mid-July, the city said the turn lane was on schedule to finish before school started on August 11. The city's project page, which has no date on it, still lists construction as underway with completion projected for summer 2026. As of early October, we found no newer report confirming the work is finished, and no separate timeline for the sidewalk or crosswalk.

If you own a home near Rocky Ridge Road, the businesses within walking distance are part of what buyers see in your house.
